Register for texting
Why US phone carriers need your business details before you can send texts, what we ask for, and how long it takes.
US phone carriers only deliver business texts from senders they've registered. Chiffchaff registers your business under its own name, with its own texting number. There's no shared number, so text review requests go out only once your registration is approved. We pay the carrier fees, and there's nothing for it on your bill.
Email and QR code requests don't need any of this. They work from day one.
What we ask for
Open Register for texting (Settings → Review requests). The registration covers the whole business, so the owner, or a manager with every location, does it.
- If your business has an EIN (a federal tax ID): the legal business name and EIN exactly as on your IRS letter, the type of business, your industry, your website (or a page about your business, like your Facebook page), the business address, and a contact the carriers can reach. An LLC always has an EIN.
- If you're a sole proprietor without one: your business name, the address, and your own details, including your own mobile number. The carriers text that mobile a code to confirm it's you, and you answer it within 24 hours. It can't be an app or office number. If the text doesn't come, use Send the text again on the same page.
Your details go to our texting provider (Twilio) for the registration and are stored encrypted. We only ever show the last 4 digits of your EIN, and we delete our copy once you're approved.
How long it takes
The carriers' review takes a few days to a few weeks. The page shows where it is: details sent, business checked, carriers reviewing your texts, and your own number ready. We email you when they decide.
While it's in review, text requests you queue wait on the Requests page with Waiting for your texting registration, and go out as soon as it's approved (still only 9 AM to 7 PM in each customer's time, Monday to Saturday). See Why a request hasn't gone out yet.
Once it's approved
Your review request texts go out from your own number, shown on the registration page. Replies and STOP messages to that number come back to you in the app. If something later stops texting from working, we email you. See Connection checks.
If it's turned down
Usually one detail doesn't match your official records. The page and our email say what to check, for example that the EIN and legal name match your IRS letter, or that the website works and shows your business name. Fix it and send it again; there's no charge. Not sure what to change? Email support@getblythe.com.
