How we ask for reviews
What every review request does and never does, your request wording checked against the rules, and the Google, FTC and Yelp rules behind it.
Asking for reviews the wrong way can get reviews taken down, or worse. Chiffchaff asks the same honest way for every business, so the reviews you earn are the kind that stay up. None of this is a setting, so it can't be switched off by accident.
What every request does
- Every customer gets the same link to leave a public review, shown first and largest.
- There's no rating step or "how was it?" question before the link, and nothing changes based on what a customer might say.
- Everyone is also offered a private note to you, below the public link. It's never required and never replaces the public review. See Private notes and the page your link opens.
- One ask per customer every 90 days. Texts go only to customers who agreed to them, and every message says how to opt out.
What it never does
- Offer anything in return for a review: no discounts, gifts, prizes or entries.
- Ask for five stars, a good review, or a review that mentions a staff member or anything specific.
- Set staff review targets. Staff names stay in your own reports and never appear in what customers see.
- Ask anyone for a Yelp review. Yelp's rules don't allow businesses to ask.

Settings → How we ask has three parts:
- Every request: the list above.
- Your request wording: the text, email and QR card wording your customers get, each checked for anything the rules forbid and marked Passes or Needs a change. The wording is fixed for now; when you can change it, the check will run as you type.
- The rules we follow: Google's review policy, the FTC's rule on consumer reviews and Yelp's rule, each with a link to the source and the date we last checked it.
The same summary is public on our How we ask page, so you can show it to anyone who asks.
A few things to avoid yourself
Chiffchaff handles the requests it sends. When you ask in person, on a sign or on social, the same rules apply to you: ask everyone, don't offer anything for a review, and don't ask for a particular rating or for staff to be named.
